Rational Functions

Rational functions are the quotient of two polynomials. Their graphs have asymptotes — lines the curve approaches but never touches — determined by the zeros of the numerator and denominator. A cancellable factor creates a hole rather than an asymptote. Understanding rational function behavior is the final step before calculus ideas about limits.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Identify vertical, horizontal, and oblique asymptotes of rational functions
Graph rational functions by analyzing intercepts and asymptotes
Simplify rational functions by cancelling common factors
Solve rational equations and inequalities
