Trigonometric Functions
Sine and cosine functions produce waves — the mathematical model for anything that repeats: tides, sound, seasons, alternating current. Amplitude is half the wave's height; period is the length of one full cycle. The parameters a, b, h, k transform the basic wave just as they transform any function. Reading a sinusoidal model from a real-world context is both a skill and a revelatory experience.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
✓Graph y = a·sin(b(x − h)) + k and y = a·cos(b(x − h)) + k
✓Identify amplitude, period, phase shift, and vertical shift
✓Determine the equation of a sinusoidal function from its graph
✓Apply sinusoidal functions to model periodic real-world phenomena
