Algebra — Expressions and Equations

Algebra is generalized arithmetic — instead of 3 + 5, we write 3 + x and ask what x must be. Expressions and equations let students describe relationships compactly. Solving x + 7 = 15 by 'undoing' the addition introduces the idea of inverse operations as an algebraic tool.
