Area of Triangles, Parallelograms, and Trapezoids

Every area formula comes from the rectangle. A triangle is half a parallelogram (which is a transformed rectangle). A trapezoid is the average of two parallel sides. Students who derive these connections don't memorize formulas — they understand them.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Derive area formulas for triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids
Understand the relationship between these shapes and rectangles
Calculate area of each shape using the appropriate formula
Apply area to solve real-world problems
