Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

5 min readGrade 6 · Number

7/3 and 2⅓ look different, but they represent the exact same quantity — a powerful insight that builds fraction flexibility.

What is an improper fraction?

An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g., 7/3, 5/5, 9/4). It represents one or more whole units plus a fractional part.

Converting between forms

To convert 7/3 to a mixed number: 7 ÷ 3 = 2 remainder 1, so 7/3 = 2⅓. To convert 2⅓ back to an improper fraction: (2 × 3) + 1 = 7, so 2⅓ = 7/3. Both forms are correct; choose the form that makes sense for your problem.

Comparing improper fractions and mixed numbers

Use a number line or convert to the same form to compare. 7/3 vs 2⅕: Convert both to improper fractions or mixed numbers, or use benchmarks to estimate which is larger.
