Central Tendency — Mean, Median, and Mode

Mean, median, and mode each answer the question 'what is typical?' in a different way. The mean balances the data, the median marks the middle, and the mode names the most common value. Students discover that one outlier — a single very large or very small value — pulls the mean but leaves the median steady, so the right average depends on the question being asked.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Calculate the mean, median, and mode of a data set
Choose the most appropriate measure of central tendency for a context
Describe how an outlier affects the mean, median, and mode
Use central tendency to summarize and compare data sets
