Solving Quadratic Equations

Quadratic equations can have two real roots, one repeated root, or no real roots — the discriminant b² − 4ac tells you which before you compute. Students master three solving methods: factoring (fastest when it works), completing the square (always works, reveals the vertex), and the quadratic formula (the universal tool). The connections between these methods deepen algebraic understanding.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Solve quadratic equations by factoring
Complete the square to solve quadratic equations
Apply the quadratic formula: x = [−b ± √(b²−4ac)] / 2a
Use the discriminant to determine the number and nature of roots
