Radical Expressions and Equations
Radical expressions extend the arithmetic of square roots into algebra: √(4x²) = 2x, and radicals can be added like like terms (√3 + 2√3 = 3√3). Solving radical equations introduces a new hazard: squaring both sides can introduce extraneous solutions that satisfy the squared equation but not the original. Checking solutions is not optional here.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
✓Simplify radical expressions using prime factorization and product/quotient laws
✓Add and subtract like radicals
✓Rationalize monomial and binomial denominators
✓Solve radical equations and identify extraneous solutions
