Radical Expressions and Equations

Radical expressions extend the arithmetic of square roots into algebra: √(4x²) = 2x, and radicals can be added like like terms (√3 + 2√3 = 3√3). Solving radical equations introduces a new hazard: squaring both sides can introduce extraneous solutions that satisfy the squared equation but not the original. Checking solutions is not optional here.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Simplify radical expressions using prime factorization and product/quotient laws
Add and subtract like radicals
Rationalize monomial and binomial denominators
Solve radical equations and identify extraneous solutions
