Reciprocal Functions

What happens when you graph 1/f(x)? Where f(x) is large, 1/f(x) is small — and vice versa. Where f(x) = 0, the reciprocal is undefined, giving a vertical asymptote. Students develop a visual intuition for rational function behavior: curves that approach lines without ever touching them, and values that grow without bound.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Graph the reciprocal of a linear function: y = 1/(x − a)
Identify vertical and horizontal asymptotes
Graph the reciprocal of a quadratic function
Describe the behavior of a function near asymptotes
