Relations, Functions, and Function Notation

The function concept is the central organizing idea of all of senior mathematics. A function is a rule that assigns exactly one output to each input — f(x) is the notation for that output. Students learn to read domain and range, apply the vertical line test, and evaluate f(3) — all in service of understanding that a function is a relationship with one fundamental restriction: no input has two outputs.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Distinguish between a relation and a function using the vertical line test
Determine domain and range from graphs, tables, and equations
Use function notation: evaluate f(x) and interpret its meaning
Identify linear and non-linear functions from their equations and graphs
