Linear Functions and Slope

Slope is one of mathematics' most versatile concepts: rate of change, steepness, rise over run. In Pre-Calculus 10, students master all three forms of a linear equation and learn what parallel (equal slopes) and perpendicular (negative reciprocal slopes) mean algebraically. These skills are the entry point to systems of equations and, eventually, calculus.

WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN
Calculate slope from two points, a graph, and an equation
Write equations of lines in slope-intercept, point-slope, and general form
Graph linear functions and interpret slope and intercepts in context
Determine whether two lines are parallel, perpendicular, or neither
